The machine

Canon built the imageRUNNER ADVANCE C5540i as the 40 page a minute member of its imageRUNNER ADVANCE C5500 series. Also in the series, by A4 speed: the imageRUNNER ADVANCE C5535i at 35, the imageRUNNER ADVANCE C5550i at 50 and the imageRUNNER ADVANCE C5560i at 60 pages a minute. On the spec sheet, it handles double sided originals in a single pass at speeds up to 80 images a minute, takes 1,200 sheets as supplied and 6,350 with paper options added and handles card as heavy as 300 gsm.

Is it right for your office?

Think of it for a busier floor of roughly fifteen to thirty people. For a bigger team, the imageRUNNER ADVANCE C5550i is the same series at 50 pages a minute. For a lighter load, the imageRUNNER ADVANCE C5535i runs at 35.

Grades, payment and setup

The imageRUNNER ADVANCE C5540i comes in three grades on our list: renewed, the closest to new; refurbished, the most popular; and used, the lowest outlay. Each is checked, with its page count in writing. Buy it outright, or rent or lease over as long as 60 months, depending on its age. The price takes in delivery, network installation, scanning setup and a walk through for your staff.

With a service agreement, our replacement warranty covers the full term. Selected machines rent from $15 a week plus GST, subject to approval. We do not sell a machine we cannot service.

Checks before you buy secondhand

• Pages printed so far. The count comes to you in writing. It says more about wear than the year on the badge.
• Options fitted. A finisher, more drawers or a high capacity tray change the work it can take on, and the figure you pay.
• Service after the sale. Secondhand only pays off while someone keeps it running. We do not sell a machine we cannot service.
• Cost per page. Get the mono and colour rates in writing, with what each one covers.
